My name is Eduardo Alonso and I am currently a
senior at Arizona State University. The purpose of this blog is to inform you
all about a great academic opportunity at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus
through the TRIO Student Support Services Program but first, I would like to
start off by giving you a little bit about my personal and academic background.
I am originally from Los Angles, CA. and I moved to Arizona in 2012 to attend
ASU as a first generation and low-income student. A few weeks before I
officially started college I received an email from the TRIO SSS program at the
Downtown campus indication that based on my financial need and first-generation
status I was eligible to be part of the program. TRIO SSS is a federally
program that aims to help first-generation, low-income and students with
disabilities reach academic success. I was able to get into the program my
freshman year and ever since then I have been very closely involved. I have
seen this program help students from different backgrounds and facing a variety
of personal and academic obstacles. Unfortunately, because it is a federally
funded program its services are limited to only 150 students whose major is
located at the downtown campus.
TRIO’s staff worked hard for about a year to get
the approval of a second grant that would allow more students to join the
program and receive the same services, fortunately enough the department of
education approved the grant and TRIO is now admitting more students for Spring
2016. TRIO is a great way to get involved on campus as well as an academic tool
to keep you on track for graduation. If you would like to get more information
